Two years? Whaaat?

I like marmalade. And I love making it.

Sunflowers

This was in my head and now it’s on a can. I’m very pleased with this, especially as, although it was in my head, I had no real idea about how to do it when I started. Even when I started painting the sunflowers in the foreground, I had no real notion about how I was going to make them look like sunflowers. So there was a lot of trial and error. That’s one of the joys of gouache, though. It’s very forgiving. You can change your mind, paint over things and hide mistakes to a certain extent.

Another Bowl

I enjoy papier-mache. I enjoy the whole process: ripping up the paper, diluting the glue, pasting, the mess, working out when to stop, waiting for it to dry, peeling it off the mold, fixing the edges.

Things have moved so fast. An outbreak of a flu like illness in China late last year has now become a global pandemic that has changed EVERYTHING. From midnight last Friday, virtually everybody in Ireland has been asked to stay...Read More

Right now, at this minute, I'm finding this difficult. I'm scared. Not really for myself. Well, a bit. But mostly for other people I know, and like, and love, and don't want to lose, or for them to feel scared,...Read More

A most extraordinary week. The rapid change in events and circumstances as a result of the global spread of the coronavirus would make your head spin. I've found it hard to keep up and then, by trying to keep up,...Read More

Happy International Women's Day. It's been big in our house. Christine held a coffee morning yesterday. She had baked a variety of her customary luscious and interesting cakes and biscuits. It was in aid of Merchant's Quay Ireland and she...Read More

Still not 100% after that general anaesthetic. I eased my way back to work this week with half days to start and then extended them for as long as I could. Anyway, I'm now at about 85% or so. I...Read More

I've been off work, recuperating from my hernia repair adventure. It takes me ages to get over general anaesthetics for some reason. So for most of the week my head has felt fuzzy. I've been able to do things (I've...Read More

My slower blog rate this year so far doesn't reflect a diminishing creative motivation. No, the ideas are still there and, with the exception of last Wednesday (don't ask: late boozy night), I have kept to my resolution and have...Read More

A Strange Week

Posted on 25 January, 202025 January, 2020 by David Meredith
First, a postscript to my last post. The labelling of my marmalade jars! It's been an odd week. I've struggled to stave off or at least not to succumb to a cold. I thought I had it under control on...Read More

Super-short post this morning just to show you the finished daisy tuna can. I'm quite pleased with this and it's been getting a good reaction on Instagram. I did take care over it, layering the gouache. In watercolours, one seems...Read More
